Microsoft Exchange Server

Microsoft Exchange Server

Microsoft’s Exchange Server 2016 is a substantial upgrade to Exchange 2013 that solidifies the platform’s position as the industry’s most versatile and sophisticated collaborative enterprise platform. The new edition boasts a resilient new architecture that refines its administrative capabilities and expands it functional vista into unified communications, support for cloud deployments, a richer set of high-availability options, and more robust database performance.

Sites currently using Exchange 2003, 2007,2010 or 2013 has several compelling reasons to transition to the new version, including:

  • Better support large-scale deployments. Among other things, it has delegated administration with a much richer set of permissions.
  • A new built-in archiving mechanism with retention policy and e-discovery support.
  • Coexistence between Exchange Online and Exchange 2016 implemented on-premises.
  • A redesigned centralized policy definition and management system. The policy framework is used in a variety of contexts, such as for data-leak prevention, rights management, determining what is archived, and retention policy.
  • The Windows Mobile experience now closely emulates the desktop Outlook.
  • The Windows Mobile experience now closely emulates the desktop Outlook.
  • “Mail Tips,” automatically warns users of such email blunders as doing a “reply all” to a very large group, or sending sensitive emails to external parties.
  • Text previews are generated of voicemail in Outlook, OWA, and Outlook Mobile.
  • User-customizable voicemail menu hierarchies.
  • Reduced I/O demands and more flexible storage options.

Outlook Anywhere

Exchange Server 2016, permits clients with Outlook to connect to servers outside the corporate network or across the Internet using the RPC over HTTP networking protocol. This accommodates centralized, secure communication for remote users from any location, and does not require a virtual private network (VPN) to be implemented. Outlook Anywhere works without any unusual hardware requirements, such as smart cards or security tokens, and allows workers complete access to all active Exchange Server resources.

Outlook Anywhere Supports:

  • Seamless access to Exchange Servers from the Internet.
  • Use of the same URL, namespace, and Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) server certificates used for Outlook Web App and Exchange ActiveSync (see below).
  • Security provisions that deny access to unauthenticated Outlook requests.

Microsft ActiveSync (Secure Mobile Data Synchronization)

Exchange ActiveSync is a Microsoft Exchange synchronization protocol that’s optimized to work together with high-latency and low-bandwidth networks. The protocol, based on HTTP and XML, lets mobile devices securely access an Exchange Server. ActiveSync enables mobile phone users to access their e-mail, calendar, contacts, and tasks and to continue to be able to access this information while they’re working offline.

ActiveSync is comprised of two implementations; one that synchronizes data and information with handheld devices with a specific desktop computer, and one that provides push synchronization of contacts, calendars, tasks, and email between ActiveSync-enabled servers and devices.
Like Outlook Anywhere, ActiveSync provides an agile means for remote users to effectively interact with the enterprise, and to assure the data available to them is secure, accurate, and up to date.

E-mail & Collaboration

Exchange 2016’s arsenal of messaging and collaboration tools is unrivalled in enterprise computing. The platform allows secure access to all communications resources (e-mail, voice mail, instant messaging, and more) from virtually any platform, browser, or mobile device. Access and permissions are tightly managed through Active Directory, which authenticates all user requests from within the network and the domain. The unified communications architecture employed in Exchange 2016 assures fast, reliable, and fault-tolerant performance. A new archiving facility is included in Exchange 2016 as well, which accommodates both high availability status and rapid disaster recovery. And messaging and communications administration has been streamlined to be performed from a single management console.
